Chrysanthemum Ball

The Charity Ball Association of San Antonio, Inc. is a non – profit organization that supports children of Bexar County. It is a generous organization that sponsors a grand event yearly in the hopes to raise money to support children’s organizations. This year
I was honored to create three six-foot tall panels that would be displayed at the event with a “chinoiserie” theme in mind. Fascinated by the history of ancient China, I became inspired by the terracotta warriors that were found in the tomb of Emporer Qin in Xian. It has been determined that Qin Shi Huangdi decreed a mass-production approach; artisans turned out figures almost like cars on an assembly line. Workers built bodies, and then customized them with heads, hats, shoes, mustaches, and ears. Some of the figures appear so strikingly individual they seem to be modeled after real people. Because remnants of paint remain on their bodies, I imagined what they might look like had they been constructed today with colorful costumes and specific personalities.
